Creativity: where did it go and how can I find it?

11 May

How to find your creativity!

I have been spending some time mulling over what creates creativity! A bunch of friends were chatting about it on e-mail not too long ago and they each stated similar things. They were talking about creativity in children; supplies, limit screen time etc… I have been thinking about creativity and also searching the web for some newer ideas to back up my thoughts. Here are some of my findings in this unofficial Chocolate Dog Studio blog on creativity!

Ok, creativity doesn’t come  with weird hair or funny clothes. Creativity isn’t inborn in just a few people. All people are creative, just not all in the same way. Some are creative with business ideas, advertising, programming, solving problems, engineering, management, homemaking, teaching.  Creativity is most often found alone. It is easier to be creative when you know that someone else isn’t going to shoot down your idea.

Spending some time along can foster creativity. My kids are often more creative when their siblings are busy with other things. They disappear into another room and emerge later with their creation!  “Psychologists have found that putting people together in the same room produces fewer and lower quality ideas than allowing people to do their thinking alone and in private. One study found that the number of new ideas actually fell by half when people are asked to think together.”

Creativity doesn’t come from people that are bored with what they are doing.  I have found that creative people are passionate about what they are doing!

The best teachers are often the most engaged in their teaching. They find creative ways of explaining the material so that their students can understand. Deadlines do not create creativity. Management often stifles creativity by putting a deadline to force their workers to produce. When I was teaching art, a veteran teacher told me that he often visited the school prior to interviews to see what kind of artwork was on the walls; the more creative the work the more secure the children and staff were.  He said that the creativity was a measure of how well the administration ran the school and the overall school atmosphere. This all ties together. People that are tuned into their work and are being creative with their job are working their hardest for the company. They care about the company and its well being. So if deadlines stifle creativity, then do we need deadlines? Hmm, yes I would say otherwise procrastination would rule!

Creativity does not equal messy. Creativity needs space and sometimes its own place but it is often hard to find good ideas among all of the mess and clutter of life. Cleaning up will often release creativity and allow it to flow. The stagnation of clutter and worries in life will often cut down on creativity. Distractions often impede creativity by allowing us from focusing on the problem and possible answers. Any distraction can keep people from being creative; pain, telephones, music,  work deadlines, fear of failure, clutter, a bad work space or environment. When students in my art class figure out that I am not going to slam them for thinking outside of the parameters of the project; they settle in become comfortable and really start creating.

I hope that you find your creative niche soon! Happy Creating!
